Health Insurance

Health InsuranceYou wouldn’t’ drive a car without insurance, so why would you skip on an insurance policy that’s even more important – health insurance?

In Australia, one third of all hospital beds are private. What does that mean for you? If you’re not covered, your options could be limited by 30%. The Australian government provides subsidies for private health insurance, giving customers a 30 perfect rebate on their plan. The goal of this program is to make health insurance more affordable for the customer.

But what exactly is health insurance?

Health insurance is basically a way to share risk across a variety of people to mitigate the risk of incurring medical expenses related to health. Having a policy obviously doesn’t reduce your risk of having an injury or needing some sort of treatment, but it does help you cover the cost if something does happen. And that’s the whole point of it. As an example, HBF Health Funds (www.hbf.com.au) is a non profit health fund in Australia, and their purpose is to cover their members in the event of an emergency. Not everyone is going to need to go to the hospital, so in a sense the cost of the hospital treatment is shared between all of the members, so people who do need treatment are not out of pocket.

Another form of insurance that is very similar to health insurance is travel insurance. Again, using HBF as an example (www.hbf.com.au/Travel/), they offer a policy that helps mitigate the risk of something happening overseas while you are travelling. Some countries, like Canada and the UK and Australia, have health cover for their citizens, but not for visitors. And the USA has none. So if something happened to you while you were overseas, you would have to pay for that expense out of your pocket. That’s why it is a very important idea to buy an insurance policy – to cover the costs should something unfortunate happen.

No one wants to have to use their health insurance policy, but it’s important to have, so if something does happen to you, you can worry about getting better – not how you are going to pay for it.

  1. We can not sustain the current retirement system for teachers. Why have retirement ages for all non-government workers risen to the age of 66 but union gov workers still retire after 30 yrs and their pensions are subsidized by tax payers? Rise the gov retirement age before even mentioning the retirement age for social security. The TP is not funded by the GOP which shows how stupid some people are. The GOP doesn’t lke the TP movement why do you think they are running agianst it in most primaries.
